Senior Managing Director
George Estey is a Senior Managing Director and Head of the firm’s Canadian advisory business.
Prior to joining Evercore, Mr. Estey was most recently Managing Director and Co-head of Greenhill Canada, formerly Beaufort Partners, an independent Canadian advisory firm which he co-founded. From 1999 to 2005 Mr. Estey was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs Canada and from 1987 to 1999 he held various investment banking advisory roles in New York, primarily related to Goldman Sachs’ Canadian business. Prior to Goldman, Mr. Estey was a general management consultant at McKinsey & Company.
Throughout his 25 year career in the advisory business, Mr. Estey has advised on numerous mergers acquisitions, divestitures and other general advisory assignments. Some of the more significant transactions have been advisor to the independent committee of the Board of BCE on the proposed sale of the company to a consortium lead by Ontario Teachers Pension Fund, advised BCE/BCI on its sale of South American and Asian cellular companies and on the Yellow Pages divestiture, BHP’s attempted takeover of Potash Corporation, Thomson’s Corporation’s sale of its newspaper portfolio to various buyers, AT&T wireless sale of its 34% stake in Rogers wireless, Manulife’s acquisition of John Hancock, advised CAE on the sale of its Marine Controls business to L3 Communications, various advisory roles for Nortel, the privatization of CN and subsequent acquisition of Illinois Central, BAT’s acquisition of Imasco and subsequent divestiture of Canada Trust and Shoppers Drug Mart, Seagram’s sale of its ownership in DuPont and other subsequent divestitures for Seagram and the restructuring of Eatons. Most recently he acted as the advisor to Forzani on its sale to Canadian Tire.
Mr. Estey received a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and a M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
